The word “contact” refers to a place where geologic units touch each other; it also conjures a human influence on the landscape. This series is comprised (so far, in 2017) of 32 quilts, most seven feet tall. The gallery section includes 31 pieces with overall views, close up details, and many of the backs. The inspiration and process sections--over 62 pages--show the sources of her ideas and the processes involved in dyeing the fabric, assembling the pieces and quilting the designs. The process has involved both looking at what is there on the land at present as well as trying to imagine events unseen. Each design required different construction techniques: some are whole cloth and some are many parts, pieced and appliquéd. Each quilt represents multiple transitions in idea and design - from the small drawing to the full size, from my imagination to the cloth, and from the flat assembled fabric to the dimensional surface created by stitching through the layers.

I use a broad array of literal, abstract, and purely imaginative imagery and envision the quilts viewed all at once, as one body of work. > Click here to request a full exhibit proposal.
