Approaches to Quilt Design with Raw-edge, Reverse Appliqué

Ann will guide participants in increasingly complex exercises teaching how to sew designs that can’t be pieced. Participants will work from the front and the back to make original blocks with many layers of color and learn to use reverse appliqué techniques to revise the design of the block and to add borders. The focus will be adapting this approach to producing designs related to each student’s particular interests, and using their own photographs. As Ann demonstrates and shows examples of many of the possible variations with reverse appliqué, students will sew their designs in as many different ways as possible. The resulting compositions may or may not resemble or represent the original photograph, but will most likely be the beginning of a new original quilt.
